Biography
A.P. Mishra was born in India to a Brahmin family within the Bharadwāja Rishi line of the Ṛg Veda (Soham Vedanta). As a young child he reported past-life memories when staring at the sky. In his youth he went to a Himalayan teacher to practice yoga. On the first day he met this teacher he remembered a flood of past life memories of yoga asanas and postures. His quest was to find answers to these mystical experiences but no person could answer his questions. After running away from home to a Himalayan ashram, he felt disillusioned by the rigid and ritualistic, almost military, rule system there. Returning home he completed university studies in history and had a 10 year career in tea sales at Unilever HLL. Very briefly he worked in south Asia for Seiko Watch Company. At the age of thirty-two he felt he had achieved enough economic independence to leave the business world. Now able to focus full-time on his spiritual quest he successfully attained his goal and became known as the Hidden Master, which translates to “Swami Gupta.”
Swami Gupta has described dissolving his duality completely and entering “Oneness” on December 23, 2002, and “Deathlessness” in 2004 by going “beyond body and mind.” Afterwards, he lived in a hermitage in the Himalayan mountains. Swami Gupta has traveled and taught throughout India. He was discovered meditating in a cave by Dr. Barbara A. Amodio Ph.D., a philosophy professor visiting India for a conference in Calcutta. With her help he was able to secure a visa and passport documents to travel abroad. He first began to teach in France and Italy but now works with students in the United States. Swami Gupta visits colleges and universities for public discourse as well as interacting with small groups at focused retreats and gatherings.
Swami Gupta’s approach adapts eastern wisdom and yogic methods to push each student closer to their inner self. He speaks of nature, love, and celebration. He honors the masters of all traditions by often stating “all masters come from the same source.” He encourages independence joined with friendship, responsibility, and service in support of God’s work. Interactions with him are often described as cathartic, joyful, and peaceful as he invites others to cultivate love and gratitude for existence itself— “Om namah sivaya.”
Messages from Swami Gupta…
Celebrate every moment
“You are meant to enjoy this life. No need to be serious. I do not wish to make you serious about meditation or religion. You should have fun in your life. Eat good food. Listen to good music. Enjoy your friends. Enjoy your family. There is no need to be serious about meditation. Taste the wine. Taste the delicious food. Just do it all with totality. You must know when you are not conscious. Accept that. That is the beginning.”
Come to the moment.
“Be conscious. Know when you are not. Don’t miss the moments. Don’t miss the opportunity. You are responsible for where you are. You must know where you are on the path.”
You are not weak.
“You have to help yourself. You have to be sincere. You are son and daughter of existence. You are not weak. Neither are you inferior, nor you are superior. Only you have forgotten, you have lost in this external world, confused.”
Love, Nature, Celebration.
“Look at the nature… and never take it for granted. This is a privileged birth. Look at the Sky. Look at the Sun. Look at Moon. Look at the Ocean. Not to be robotic- Just feel it. Be natural. When you are natural, you be childlike, you will be peaceful, you be celebrated. And our seriousness is taking away from everything. So take it easy.”
